Our History


The original Fire Department was appointed by the Village Board of Trustees on January 7, 1836 as a Hook and Ladder Company comprised of 16 men.  Fire Engine Company of Clyde #1 formed on Monday January 15, 1840.

1841- Gooseneck Engine “The Cataract” was purchased for $1000.00

1841- The Cataract Fire Company #1 was formed

May 1860- Fires were rung out by the bell in the Episcopal Church until a fire bell was hung in the old Engine and Hook and Ladder house this date.

Oct 7, 1857- The Village Board of Trustees presented the Cataract Engine Company with a new hand engine called “The Niagara” for $1100.00. On Oct 20, 1857, the name of the company was changed to the Niagara Fire Company #2. The Hand Engine Niagara was destroyed in the Clyde Glass Works fire on July 24, 1873. The Niagara Fire Company disbanded on Mar 26, 1874.

May 1859- Another Hand Engine was purchased.

June 1861- Hose Cart purchased for $150.00

1872- Two dams were constructed to retain water for use in fires.

Sept 1873- The Village purchased a new Silsby Steam Fire Engine and hose for $5000.00 which was put into use a month later.

1873- Protectives Hook and Ladder Co. #1 was organized.

July 17, 1883- Ever-Ready Chemical and Hose Co. #2 was organized.

Fall 1889- Village water supply by hydrant was utilized.

1898- Electric Hose Company #3 was organized.

June 1886- Old Fire Bell replaced with a larger bell.

July 23, 1914- Fire Alarm system put into use.

1927- Fire alarm system replaced by a whistle.

 

Presently the Fire Department is served by the Protectives, Ever-Ready, Electric, and Rescue companies.
